The Melvins will attempt to become the Guinness World Record holders for the first band to tour the full United States and D.C. in 51 days with a tour kicking off Sept. 5 in Anchorage, Alaska and wrapping up Oct. 25 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
“We figured it was time for us to do something REALLY crazy,” said Osborne. “51 shows in 50 states plus 1 on D.C. and all in 51 days? Jeez! I wonder if we can do it?”
The tour, which will feature the Melvins Lite line-up of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Trevor Dunn, also marks the first time in the band’s near 30-year history that they will perform in Alaska, New Hampshire, Delaware and Hawaii.
Arriving in-stores and online today is Freak Puke, the debut release from Melvins Lite that Spin recently described as “a unique detour for the long-running band” and adding “one of the loudest bands on earth has perfectly siphoned their gloomy energy into evil cocktail jazz.”
“We had seen Trevor playing upright bass in a jazz setting and thought that we could utilize that for a recording project,” explained Crover. “This is something different from the two drummer/big hair line-up, which we plan on continuing with as well.”
Prior to the Fall, the Melvins have a full spate of appearances. The band perform two shows in conjunction with Subliminal Projects: June 8 at The Echoplex in Los Angeles and June 30 at TT Underground Gallery in New York. Buzz Osborne will be a guest on Fox News’ “Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld” on June 28. Melvins Lite will also venture north for a three week trek of primarily Canadian tour dates that kicks off on July 1 (dates below).
The Melvins were formed in Montessano, Washington in 1983 by Buzz Osborne, Matt Lukin and Mike Dillard. Lukin and Dillard left the band and drummer Dale Crover stepped in shortly thereafter. Osborne and Crover have been the Melvins’ mainstays throughout their 29 year metamorphosis.
To date the band has released 25 original albums, numerous live full-lengths and far too many to count singles and rarities. They’ve partnered with Jello Biafra, Lustmord and Fantomas for individual releases and toured the world many times over (most recently making headlines for being in both Christchurch and Tokyo for their 2011 earthquakes).
With the release of (A) Senile Animal in 2006, the Melvins became a four-piece, essentially annexing Jared Warren and Coady Willis of Big Business . The Melvins, already known for their shattering mix of punk-meets-metal (and often referred to by an assortment of tags including sludge and grunge), were now louder and more bombastic than ever leading to a resurgence in the band’s popularity and a run of three original full-lengths. For 2012 the Melvins have a new EP titled Scion A/V Presents The Bulls and the Bees as well as a new incarnation in their arsenal: Melvins Lite. This additional version of the Melvins pairs Osborne and Crover with Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, MadLove, Fantomas); the Melvins Lite debut release is Freak Puke, which is available June 5 via Ipecac Recordings.
